From Bench to Bedside and Beyond

It takes an average of 12 years for a drug to travel from the research lab bench to the patient’s bedside. Edinburgh’s BioQuarter is a leading campus for translational medical research, turning innovative ideas into reality and driving medical innovation in Scotland and beyond.

Discussing how new medical treatments are progressed from ‘bench to bedside’ in the cutting-edge field of stem cell research, health journalist Pennie Taylor is joined by Programme Director Hans Möller, University of Edinburgh neurologist Prof Anna Williams, University of Edinburgh stem cell researcher Dr Tilo Kunath and Cell Therapy Development Manager for RoslinCT, Dr Lindsay Fraser.

Edinburgh BioQuarter is a collaboration between NHS Lothian, the City of Edinburgh Council, Scottish Enterprise and The University of Edinburgh. Located to the south of Edinburgh, it includes the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, University of Edinburgh Medical School, Queen’s Medical Research Institute and Centre for Regenerative Medicine. It is a leading hub for translational and regenerative medicine, and health informatics. It also houses a number of companies working to develop drugs and products for the commercial life sciences market. Already home to a thriving community of healthcare and research students and professionals, Edinburgh BioQuarter will expand considerably over the next several years.
